TRANSLATION AS A POLITICAL ACT

Translated literature is growing in popularity, but what does it mean to have a translation, or to be translated? How can language both bridge and reinforce cultural divides, shaping our understanding of the world and our place within it? This panel, which took place on Sunday 24 November at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, explored the power and politics of language and translation; the intricate dynamics of linguistic expression and the transformative impact of translation on culture, identity, and communication. Oksana Maksymchuk, Martin MacIntyre and Hasib Hourani, alongside host Taylor Strickland, addressed the political implications of translation, including issues of representation, accessibility, and cultural identity.
