This sound work is the result of Beldina’s exploration and direction of the Edwin Morgan poems A Home in Space and The First Men on Mercury through the eyes of Edward Festus Mukuka Nkoloso, a member of the Zambian resistance movement and the founder of the Zambian National Academy of Science, Space Research and Philosophy, Valentina Tereshkova, Russian Cosmonaut, Engineer and the first and only woman to achieve solo space flight and David Mackay the first Scotsman in space.
The audio ‘transmission’ echoes the Voyager Golden Discs that were created by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan in 1977 to accompany Voyager 1 and 2. Within the transmissions the three individual space missions have settled on these new planets and have each created a historical document of their journey, new culture and messages for the old Earth civilisation.
A recorded sound work can be heard below, as well as a video of her recent performance at Eden Court in full.
