In 2024 we were delighted to support the first phase of a project, led by Katherine Mendelsohn, to build a script archive of 50+ years of international plays translated by Scotland-based translators and inspire a new generation of playwrights, directors and actors to explore this rich seam of work.

As part of this project, a panel event celebrating Scotland’s translators of international plays for UK stages is taking place in August at Summerhall in Edinburgh. Its title, “Widening the Horizon”, takes its inspiration from Edwin Morgan, who spoke of his aim to “widen the horizon by translating”.

Chaired by Joyce McMillan and featuring writer-translators Jo Clifford, Liz Lochhead, Alan McKendrick, Katherine Mendelsohn, and Mariem Omari, the event will celebrate and explore the importance of this vibrant aspect of Scottish theatre
